I have learned to ask for landmarks when getting directions, that way I can keep an eye out for more things that just a street name.

Especially when the traffic is heavy, I prefer to be looking for something that will pop out at me from a distance.

Valeria - That example with directions and gender really hits home. My husband wants the most antiseptic directions. I definitely like landmarks and something that helps me verify I'm on the right path between turns.

When I give him directions he gets angry if I give him too many landscape clues. It's really funny. (Of course, when I don't give him any and he gets lost he's then mad at ME!)

Lewis -- that is why blogs are *so* powerful. Here we can talk about the mistakes and the misunderstandings. As well, we can take the conversation to the next level. I'm in favor.

Joe -- tone via email is in fact often a detractor to the message. As with all informal communications, it is best to leave tone to more clues than just words.
