Let's face it, no news or news related post, no spike. Why do you think there are so many posts still about social media and controversy? News value.

Also, please note I included "time" in that subhead. There is a spike tactic and there is a Long Tail value. Without the spike though, it is likely fewer people will find your content, link to it, and drive it (and your site) up in search results.

It's both.
