This year marks the 50th anniversary the Pirelli Calendar, a favorite example of design of story the sensual way -- art as communication medium.
For this special occasion, the Pirelli photographic archives were re-opened to feature 12 black and white fine art photographs shot by Helmut Newton, who was enlisted by Italy to shot the calendar in 1986 alongside colleague Bert Stern who was instead chosen by the British arm of Pirelli.
the only task Newton was given was of including the Pirelli product in all of the shots: a completely new approach to the Calendar, in which little or no space was previously given to the tyres themselves. All photographs were shot in Monte Carlo and in the Chianti region of Tuscany and feature lovely ladies who seem to have stepped out of an Italian Neoralistic movie#.
In addition to the 12 black and white photographs, the 2014 edition features 29 behind-the-scenes images, all shot in Monte Carlo and Chianti. Coincidentally, 2014 and 1986 share the same calendar year.
As we continue to experiment with technology to enhance, augment, and extend our reach, this visual collection is a powerful reminder of the power of vision and a unique point of view.
